Ask Vic: Packers, Steelers deserving of respect

Question: Where do you get off brushing the Packers aside? You call the Dallas win over the Giants "impressive," but if you recall, the Pack laid a much mightier whooping down on New York in Week 2. It's not like the Giants were struggling early either, like a lot of people are claiming. They played the Cowboys in Dallas and lost 45-35. The next week the Pack shut them down, 35-13. The simple fact is that the Packers' defense has been making teams look ugly all year, and the offense is scoring in clutch situations. Why aren't the Packers getting the love? --Matt H., Green Bay

I don't agree that I'm "brushing the Packers aside" by saying that the Cowboys are the best team in the NFC. I see the Packers as the second-best team in the conference and third-best in the league.

Star Sugden walks tall in a lions den

Chad Sugden of Newark Martial Arts Club travelled to Scotland on Friday to fight for the WKA 50kg British title in what his father and coach Dean Sugden described as the most hostile environment he has ever witnessed.

The 13-year-old was up against Scott Allen from Motherwell and the journey from Newark started at 7am for a noon weigh-in at The Rivals Gym in Scotland.

The fight attracted a lot of attention as Chad has proved himself the best in Britain previously but had never fought against his older opponent.

The 15-year-old started as the favourite as he had never lost in home town and holds two world and various British titles, but the Newarker was confident as he had been training and sparring with his recently crowned European champion club-mate Jade Grierson.

Mooney was feisty, fearless; Lifelong Kingstonian nearly won 1982 ...

I'll never forget one day during the campaign when we did a radio talk debate on one of the stations. After it was over, she took me to her car and opened the back of her trunk. I thought she was going to take out a sawed-off shotgun but instead she had three jars of home-made jam and told me to take them home to my kids."

After his near-defeat, Gerretsen said he became good friends with Mooney and visited her before every election.

"She was a person who was totally dedicated to the community - feisty, but you know, I think deep down inside she was really a wonderful individual, caring about her community and caring about a lot of other people."

Mooney told a reporter during last year's civic election campaign that she wanted the following words engraved on her tombstone: "Do not stand by my grave and weep.

County staffers getting bonus

This sort of reminds me of Al Gore's campaign. In an attempt to buy votes legally, he promised a governmemt check to just about everyone except those who actually have to work for a living. IcebergTYS, you make a good point. Trust me, neither Todd Cook nor Cindy Finch who make well in excess of a hundred thou a year go home each day in a state of mental and physical exhaustion like many people working in the private sector.

Author Michael Lewis Tackles Football's 'Blind Side'

Michael Oher is currently a sophomore at the University of Mississippi. His coaches say he is "probably the most talented player in the offensive line" for the Rebels. He has started in every game this season as a left tackle, after playing right guard last season. As a freshman, he earned a varsity letter and played in all 11 games. He was named to the First Team Freshman All-SEC by the SEC coaches and The Sporting News after helping Rebels running back Mico McSwain establish an Ole Miss freshman rushing record. Oher is a student in the College of Liberal Arts and has not yet picked a major.
