The Rev. Al Sharpton angrily denounced federal authorities Thursday for investigating him and his civil rights organization, suggesting that the Justice Department was retaliating against him for his civil rights advocacy. "I have probably been under every investigation known to man and I can't remember a time that I've not been under investigation," Sharpton said at the Harlem headquarters of his civil rights organization. He continued: "The issues raised are issues that we've learned over and over again, particularly when we are approaching an election season." Sharpton, 53, called the news conference after reports emerged Thursday of a federal probe into his finances. The U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn, where the investigation is based, declined to comment.
Campaign 2008
Another difference, according to Bailey, is the absence of concerted attacks from Democrats against Democrats. "At the local level, we warn our candidates, 'Don't attack. You will only harm yourself.' "There is no finger-pointing, just polite controversy," she said. "The Republicans can get pretty nasty toward each other." The Public Trustee, appointed by the Governor, "sees first-hand the results of the prevailing Republican attitude," Bailry said. Her office handles property foreclosures, the biggest dark cloud on the economic horizon in a long time. Bailey said she has seen the "tried and true homeowner, just dealing with a run of bad luck like loss of job or health, or a bad mortgage." She has also seen investors "losing their shirts. "They are not able to rent, and adjustable-rate mortgages are putting them in a bind," she said.

Cosgrove candidate for URI position
Jack Cosgrove has been the face of University of Maine football for the last 15 years. Apparently, the veteran head coach and former Black Bears quarterback is considering making a change. The Providence Journal reported Tuesday that Cosgrove, 52, is among four candidates for the head coaching position at the University of Rhode Island. The Rams play with UMaine in the Colonial Athletic Association North Division. Cosgrove reportedly is on a list of candidates with Darren Rizzi, the associate head coach at Rutgers; Pete Adrian, the head coach at Norfolk State; and Robert Talley, the head coach at Stonehill College. Interviews for the position were to have begun Tuesday. Rhode Island last month fired coach Tim Stowers after he led the Rams to a 33-57 record in eight seasons.

Top-ranked Maryville rips Red Bank 52-20 in quarterfinals
MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- So much for ending streaks. The streak previously ubeaten Red Bank sought to scissor was extended and the one the Lions had hoped to sustain was snapped. For the second year in a row, Maryville maintained a streak at Red Bank's expense and ended a Lions' win streak at 12. The host Rebels, shooting for their seventh state title in eight years, moved into the TSSAA Class 4A semifinals in convincing fashion, decimating the Region 4-4A champions 52-20. It was a methodical, near-robotic showing by the Rebels, who handed the 12-1 Lions the worst 4A whipping they have had in their four-year run of region championships. The 52 points is the most a Red Bank team has ever surrendered in the postseason and the 32-point spread was the second-worst in the Lions' playoff history and their worst since a 49-0 loss in their initial playoff appearance in 1971.
