Gildan praised at ceremony

Officials say Gildan Activewear is Martinsville and Henry County's newest success story.

The company met its $7 million capital investment within 16 months of starting operations in Henry County and plans to exceed its projected 175 employees in three years. So far, it has 140 full-time employees and 100 temporary workers.

On Tuesday, Gildan and area officials cut a ribbon to “inaugurate" the company's local operation, a distribution center that opened on Joseph Martin Highway in September 2006.

Mark Heath, president and chief executive officer of the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corp., said the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce recognized Gildan with the Keystone Award in May for creating the most jobs in the previous calendar year.

Top-seeded Stanford reaches NCAA volleyball final against Penn State

SACRAMENTO, Calif.: Just when Asia Kaczor appeared poised to power Southern California past Stanford and into the NCAA volleyball championship, the Cardinal capitalized on two of her rare mistakes to save their season.

Kaczor served long on match point and was blocked on the next play, then top-seeded Stanford finished off a thrilling 16-14 Game 5 win for a hard-fought 3-2 victory over its Pac-10 rival Thursday night.

"It was an amazing match," Stanford coach John Dunning said. "They are about three times as good as the first time we played them."

Stanford will play Saturday night against third-seeded Penn State (33-2), which swept No. 10 California (26-8) in the late semifinal. Nicole Fawcett had 13 kills for the Big Ten champion Nittany Lions, who won 30-28, 30-25, 30-16 in the first meeting between the schools — and have a 25-match winning streak since a 3-2 loss to Stanford on Sept.

Colonising a metaphor

"There is a cry of anguish from the depth of my heart, to my spiritual relatives. Please, please hear the call, the noble call of our scripture," Bishop Desmond Tutu, winner of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize beseeched Israelis at "The Apartheid Paradigm in Palestine-Israel" conference sponsored by Friends of Sabeel North America, a Christian Palestinian group in Boston recently. "Don't be found fighting against this god, your god, our god, who hears the cry of the oppressed," Tutu said.

For more than a century, archaeologists and historians have attempted to confirm beliefs of both Christians and Jews about their common past using the Old Testament (OT) and New Testaments (NT) as starting points.

Christians, while embracing the OT as a harmless precursor of the NT, insist that the combined texts prove the truth of Judaic monotheism, with its covenant with God, a covenant that was renewed with the resurrection of Jesus as the Christ.

Examining the 'Squandering' of American Promise

Americans have the good fortune to live in a nation that has stood for political liberty and economic opportunity since its founding. Even in the republic's early years, when we cherished our isolation from a troubled world, the American idea was a beacon to other nations. In the twentieth century, a bolder, more outward-looking America came to stand for enlightened leadership globally. At home, a more democratic America became a more balanced society. Public policies promoted broad prosperity and economic security, by harnessing the creative, often chaotic power of capitalism for the general good.

Today, we are seeing the squandering of America, on multiple fronts. The ultimate test of a democracy is whether it is possible for the people to throw out the governing party. In politics, we have come very close to losing our democracy, not just in rigged rules and stolen elections but in the domination of politics by big money, the decline in participation by ordinary people, and the assault on basic constitutional liberties.
